A small amount of water spill on the keyboard is not necessarily a cause of concern. If it was some other liquid, I would have headed over to the Mac store and hated myself for the hole in my pocket that this silly accident would have caused. Fortunately, it wasn’t as tricky.

Step one: I disconnected the power supply and switched off the laptop immediately. Then I wiped the keyboard using the shirt I was wearing since it was the quickest thing at hand.

Step two: I removed the battery by unlocking it using a coin (you will see what I mean when you see it). Then I removed the hard drive and the two RAM chips. Instructions are printed in the battery slot.

Step three: Using a very fine Phillips (+) head jeweler’s screwdriver, I undid the screws. There were several of them, I was fascinated with the precision, number and the kinds of screws they used.

Step four: Using an old credit card, I took the upper (keyboard) layer off, revealing the beauty inside. Laptops are delightful, and this Apple is much better than the last HP (windows) laptop that I opened.

Step five: After letting it dry for few hours, I took pictures and assembled everything back. This blog post is a testimony that everything is normal now.

Now that I’ve done this (after owning the laptop for about 2.5 years, what a shame!), I am thinking of upgrading the hard drive to 250 or 500 GB and memory to 3 to 4 GB. It seems quite straightforward.

Mac OS X has a built-in support for a very large number of language scripts around the world. So the option of typing in Hindi or Hebrew or Hungarian or any other language, is few clicks away!

1. Open System Preferences

Click the Apple icon in your menu bar and select System Preferences. Alternatively you can simply spotlight (command-space) for ‘System Preferences’ and it will show up.

2. Choose the International Languages you want

In the System Preferences, click on “International”. You will see the following screen:

Click on “Input Menu” to see a list of all supported languages in your computer.

Check the “Character Palette” checkbox.
Check the “Keyboard Viewer” checkbox.
Check the “Show input menu in the menu bar” checkbox at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll down and find the languages of your choice. For Indian languages based on Devanagri script (Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi, Nepali), check Devnagari-QWERTY.

Screen 3: System Preferences > International > Input Menu > Select languages of your choice.

Notice an icon with a flag on the right side of your menu bar (next to the clock and the battery indicator). Clicking the icon will reveal the list of alternate input languages. Simply select the language you want and you are done.

As you can see, I have 3 languages: English, देवनागरी and Русский installed

If you are ever stuck, the keyboard map comes handy. Click the “Show Keyboard Viewer” from the input menu in the menu bar (image above). You will get the following keyboard layouts (shown for Indic scripts only, it will change as you press the keys as shown below):

Keyboard Viewer (click to enlarge) – its not complicated at all. My mother could use it within minutes.

Complex Marathi / Hindi characters can be built by combining sounds. Here is a small list:

As you see, its pretty phonetic; “f” is used to shorten the sound. p=प, pf=प्

Using Indian languages in Windows XP/2000

Support for a plethora of Indian languages is available in Windows XP/2000 too. Here is a wikipedia page that shows you how to enable language support in Windows XP and certain Linux distributions.

I have a confession to make. I had a long standing dream of designing and making weapons of mass destruction using a music software on my laptop. In order to achieve my dream, I downloaded a free copy of iTunes software. But guess what, Apple won’t let me reach my goal…

These are real screenshots from Apple’s iTunes License Agreement which I was asked to agree to while updating to iTunes v 8.1.1 (Mac). I’m pasting relevant sections of the user agreement that prohibits you from doing certain activities. If you have heard this before, see it yourself.

PS: For those who have no clue what I am talking about: Apple’s iTunes is the standard software on Mac (now also on Windows) and is used to play music, sync ipod, listen to radio, etc.
Oh the extent to which these corporates go to cover their asses… I suggest they also declare that iTunes cannot be used for pedophilia, sexual molestation, sub-prime mortgages and war of terror.
