After years of researching, interviewing, running around libraries, studios and analyzing loads and loads of thoughts, information, AND running a family and her music school, my mother’s hard work finally paid off. She received her PhD in Music today.
And I call her super mom for a reason. I honestly have no clue how she does infinite things a day. I would get exhausted even if I do half the things she does. And to us, it seemed like, ‘Alright, I’m going to get some groceries, pay our bills on time, pot the plants, mop the kitchen, teach my students, cook dinner, raise you, and uh, maybe get a PhD on the way…’

My mother’s research work was focused on the work of musicians from Maharashtra and their role in Hindi film industry. There were no written records of historical work or research anywhere remotely associated with this area, so she had to scour the ground herself. I thought that was remarkable.
She also runs a music school, single-handedly teaching vocal music to about hundred students and is also involved with lot of music groups in Mumbai.
Meanwhile did I mention that she got acquainted with using the computer, internet, audio/video technology, etc. because she wanted to do the whole bloody thesis in Marathi all by herself?
Oh, and next in line for PhD (in few years) is my younger sister. Seriously! What’s with the women in my family?
As if Square Root day was not enough, we celebrated Pi (π) day today. March 14 (i.e. 3.14)! I baked a blueberry pie because it was the easiest.

Blueberry pie. With mysterious signs on it.
If the mathematician in you is particular about his numbers, celebrate Pi day on March 14 at 1:59 am. Because
(Please, lets not count seconds)
I respected the mathematician in me and this post will be published at 1:59 am.

Blueberry pie
It was the first time I was baking a pie and it was such a disaster. First, I took it out of the oven because it ‘looked’ okay. After cooling, I cut it, only to discover that it was not ready yet. How lame, it tasted too doughy. I put it back in the oven hoping to salvage some, but, you know, it ended up being mediocre. I still ate it because I am capable of eating any baked dessert!
Thanks Odzer for participating even when it was a crazy time in Chandigarh, and Jeruen be ready, spring break will be over soon!
Updates:
March 16: Gopinath wrote a humorous post and even calculated his IQ. Sorry to say Gopinath, but you get a zero in that calculation!
March 16: Mavin, in a unique approach, started reading the book called ‘Life of Pi.’
With no promises of being saner,
Priyank.

When you are with someone as geeky as you… You do weird things, like celebrating Square Root Day!
This unofficial holiday comes but nine times a century. The numbers of the calendar align in special way. dd and mm are each the square-roots of yy. We recently had a square root day: March3, 2009.
3×3=9, √9=3

Square Roots, ginger and radish, very original isn’t it!
So, how did we celebrate the Square Root day? We celebrated it by eating roots – radish and ginger. Cut in shapes with square cross-sections, creating Square Roots! ![]()

Footnotes: Since many of you won’t notice, let me bring to your attention:
- There are 3 paragraphs in this post,
- Each sentence in this post has 9 words,
- There are 9 sentences,
- A group of 3 square root symbols appear thrice,
- The third root in the picture above is actually a potato. It is dedicated to all the people who argue that potato is a root.
Update:
The next mathematically significant day is the Pi (π) day: 3.14 (March 14). I am going to bake (guess what) a pie!
This is a strange tag, but I am tagging Odzer to bake a pie, Jeruen and Rambodoc to either bake or buy one, Paul to share a memorable pie story and Gopinath to write a humorous post about people doing weird things. Who else wants to participate? More the merrier! Remember guys, March 14th!
I was tagged by Odzer and Vamsee for a photo blog-post. Now this is a good excuse to post something on my otherwise dormant blog.
Rules of this tag are:
- Pick the 6th picture in the 6th picture folder
- Write the story behind it
- Pass it on to 6 other people
So the picture posted above is the 6th picture in the 6th picture gallery of my blog.
: Step 2 : : The Story
Very simple. About 2 years ago, I visited the Toronto Distillery District near downtown Toronto. This is a heritage area which was once the largest distillary in the British empire. Today, the buildings constitute the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America. Toronto Distillery District has become one of the most romantic and enjoyable destinations in the city. It is the city’s first pedestrian only village and the city’s only historic district. The area has become associated with creative thinking and expression and it’s rebirth has been dedicated to promoting arts, culture and entertainment.

: Step 3 : : The part where you infect others
I am not sure if you guys do tags, but my six victims are:
Amit | Anil | Anna | Linguist-in-waiting | Trisha | Mridula
Have fun! (I did!)
