Summer is fast approaching and I was getting restless without a bicycle. After lot of search, I finally found a good deal for a second hand (or ‘used’ as they call it here) bike. It’s a brand called ‘Supercycle’ by Canadian Tire and has 15 gears.
I was so excited to lay my hands upon my own bike in Canada. Look at her, isn’t she beautiful??

Toronto has lot of trails to offer for cyclist. This is one such near my university along the black creek between Finch and Sheppard Avenue. I bet this place must be heavenly during the summer. At the moment there is some snow and its too cold.

Thats me. Feels so good

– ही कविता स्वप्नाने लिहिली आहे.
Today is “Gudhi Padwa”, the new year celebrated by Maharashtra. It falls on the first day of Chaitra, the first month of the Hindu calendar. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma created the universe today. Gudi’s (Brahmadhwaj – flags of Brahma) are raised by individual houses as a symbol and prayer. It is also said that Lord Rama returned victorious to Ayodhya on this day.
Kannada and Telugu people call this festival Ugadi.
Gudi padwa for me meant a fest of puran polis. Oh, mom used to make me eat neem leaves as part of the ritual before the treat!

Right next to by b-school is the Faculty of Fine Arts. From March 9 to April 1 2007, they are organizing a Fine Arts Festival.
The Faculty of Fine Arts at York University is spotlighting its resident talent in a three-week festival packed with more than 40 exciting and entertaining [tag]event[/tag]s. Running March 9 to April 1, the York Fine Arts Festival features [tag]exhibition[/tag]s, [tag]theatre[/tag] and [tag]dance[/tag] productions, [tag]film[/tag] screenings, multimedia [tag]shows[/tag], and a wide variety of classical, jazz and world [tag]music[/tag] [tag]concerts[/tag]. Events take place in state-of-the-art facilities at York University’s Keele campus.
I’m pretty excited about the whole affair. The event is packed with stuff like world music (Caribbean, Celtic, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, African etc), Dance, Orchestra, Theatre, Film and more. I have never seen most of them yet, so the whole thing looks promising.
Lets see how the arts engagements can be attended while succumbing to the already overloaded MBA schedule… aargh!
Today the clocks here sprang up by an hour to DST – [tag]Daylight Savings Time[/tag]. That means, IST is now 9.5 hrs ahead of EST. Initially I was irked by the thought of decreasing my sleep by one hour, but thanks to my erratic schedule, this change in clocks did not affect me at all
Here is some information about [tag]Daylight-saving time[/tag] from Wikipedia
Daylight saving time ([tag]DST[/tag]), also known as summer time in British English, is the convention of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less… Governments often promote DST as an energy conservation measure because it substitutes summer afternoon sunlight for electrical lighting… In a typical case where a one-hour shift occurs at 02:00 local time, in spring the clock jumps forward from 02:00 standard time to 03:00 DST and the day has 23 hours…
Being closer to the equator, India does not follow DST.
India does not observe daylight saving time, (DST) or other seasonal adjustments, although DST was used briefly during the Sino–Indian War of 1962 and the Indo–Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971.

This year, DST adjustments were done 3 weeks earlier compared to 2006. The shift to DST has been advancing by 3 weeks, maybe that will be enforced all thorghu the year! The sunrise today in Toronto was at 7:37 AM, with a day length (sunrise to sunset) of 11 hr 43 min. By June 21, the day will be 15 hr 47 min long! I really miss the early 6:45 AM sunrise in India though!
Hopefully this change in time will indeed result in some [tag]energy saving[/tag]s.

Come September and the trees start shedding their leaves. Soon they are robbed of every trace of green; something that makes us wonder if the tree is dead. By December, it starts [tag]snow[/tag]ing and the brown tree struggles to support the weight of snow on it. Water, which had nurtured the growth of the tree from a seed, has now become its enemy. The tender [tag]Cherry[/tag] which had just grown is scared to death. One wonders if water has turned into a demon.
But can a mother hurt her child? The evidence of this demonic love is seen in the picture. Look how tenderly the cherries are covered with [tag]ice[/tag]. It protects the seed inside from cold dry winds. Soon the Sun God will be back beaming with his warmth. The ice will melt away into water but that’s not the end of it. It will help sow the very seed it had protected all this while.
Funny story, isn’t it?
I’m resisting an urge to preach lessons from this. But it’s a lesson everyone has to learn themselves.
PS: This picture is not taken by me! I just got it in some email forward
